# # # # No way it could be useful to practice
# # # # # moving fast and shooting accurately, shooting while the
# # adrenaline # # is # pumping, shooting moving targets, shooting from
# # behind cover, # # etc.
# # # #
# # # # If you read what I wrote I believe I said some of that is just
# # what # # you should practice.
# # #
# # # Why, why, that sounds like it IPSC/IDPA/etc might be useful after
# # all!
# #
# # Useful but not the end of the training and very dangerous when one
# # assumes it is.
#
# Who assumed it was? More dangerous than no training or practice at all?
Or the wrong training?
#
# # Given the number of people who buy a gun
# # and never practice at all, I # think people who shoot matches are
# # getting ahead of the game.
# #
# # No argument there.
#
# All previous arguments aside, I suppose.
#
# # It is only a good thing if one understands the limitations. Cops used
# # to train with revolvers. After firing, they would dump their
# # cartridges into a tin can. It was discovered that even in real
# # gunfights they would turn and look for the can to dump the empties.
# # That is what they were being trained to do.
#
# This has urban myth written all over it.
Really, because you say so? Talk to John Farnham, he has been there; and he
is an international firearms trainer. It is an example he uses in class. I
believe Cirillo also mentions it in his tapes and book.
Not a urban myth for Farnham. I suspect his credentials are far better than
yours.
#
#
# # # # Look I understand that, if the match skills are all that you
# # have, # # you are
# # # # considerable better off than Joe Blow, who has nothing.
# # #
# # # Glad we agree.
# #
# # If you are starving a hamburger is as good as a steak. I think you
# # will find we agree on more things than we disagree.
#
# So why complain when someone gives you a hamburger?
I did not; but then I am now a long way from starving.
#
# # Some guy is asking about buying a gun to compete in
# # # IDPA, and a comment is made about IDPA vs IPSC, and you think the
# # issue # is how to achienve the highest posible level of training? You
# # don't think # the question is "what is a fun and inexpensive way to
# # enjoy my gun and # learn/hone a few useful skills in the process?"
# #
# # It seems that is what you and I are talking about is what the match
# # shooting will do and what it will not do - no?
# # The issue of what caliber of gun was settled long ago.
#
# I posted my comment in response to a post about the differences between
# IPSC and IDPA.
OK if you go back and read my orginal comment it was not that inflammatory
nor did I intend it to be. You simply got your drawers in a wedgie.
#
# # # # # # Ignore the timer if you want
# # # # # # training for real life. With the timer it becomes a track meet
# # and # # not # # training for real life.
# # # # # # Go to tactical schools that teach the techniques.
# # # # #
# # # # # You know, I've taken a tactical training course,
# # # #
# # # # I commend you for that. However, you cannot make a garden with one
# # # # rose. Take some more. Take all you can. Each one will teach a lot.
# # And # # they are fun!!
# # #
# # # Like many shooters, shooting and self defense and important, but not
# # the # most important things in my life.
# #
# # Yes, I understand that; but, it could save your life. It is
# # considerably important to me and I have done a bunch of them.
# #
# # My wife, my business, my kids, my other
# # # hobbies, politics, etc all compete for my time.
# #
# # All of which you may have to defend at some time. I have seen to many
# # people in CCW classes that say never again. I encourage them to go
# # shoot matches. Most do not. I encourage them to take the tactical
# # courses. They do not. It is rather discouraging to be around people
# # that seem to think others are responsible for their saftey. Even
# # people who are in CCW classes. So you will have to forgive me for
# # wanting a nation of people that can take care of themselves. I get a
# # bit more rabid on the subject than most. My best friends are people
# # who can take care of themselves well, ex rangers, ex special forces,
# # ex cops, martial arts instructors. It is a mystery to us why people
# # will not devote some time and effort to being able to take care of
# # themselves. It make us vulnerable as a nation to situations like the
# # one that occurred on 9-11. It is not the America I want. There are
# # enough people around who think we should not be allowed weapons of any
# # sort.
#
# You really project a lot of attributes on people with just a little
# information.
Really? I have taught too many of them every month. Too many display every
attribute I just said; and they are discouraging. If you think the average
person has been trained to defend himself you are not reading the daily
paper. I am getting fairly old and most of my generation served in the
military. That is no longer true for most of today's young. I dont know how
old you are; but I attended a land grant college. At that time two years of
ROTC was required. The ROTC program had 2,000 cadets in it. Many of us went
on to two more years and got commissioned. Today that same college has 12
cadets in the program. Just a small illustration of the changing times.
#
# # While I hope to take
# # # another class at some point, it isn't the thing that gets me out of
# # bed # in the morning.
# #
# # It also could keep you from becoming permanently in bed. I suspect you
# # will get to take another class.
#
# Because you know me so well, right?
Excuse me for trying to be positive. At this point I really dont care what
you do; but if you enjoy the shooting sports you should find this aspect
of them enjoyable. If you dont try some more defensive courses, given the
opportunity, that is your loss not mine.
