# # I would suggest you read even a smigin of Jack O'Connor. He once
# # knocked over a gigantic grizzly bear with the 130 grain bullet and
# # this was back before they even invented bonded bullets that always
# # stay together.
#
# Right you are! Jack O'Connor has taken one of EVERY animal on the
# North (and I believe the South) American continent with the .270. But, of
# couurse, it's 'barely adaquate' for white tailed deer. </sarcasm off>
#
And the 30-30 has easily taken every game animal in North America. As has
the .22 LR. In the 1950's there was a Canadian guide that liked to take
inland grizzly's with a brain shot placed in the bruins ear from his .22
rimfire.
My argument is that the .270 firing 130gr factory bullets isn't as "perfect"
as Mr. O'Connor would have had the public believe. I have seen more bullet
failures with this particular cartridge/bullet combination than all others
combined. If forced to choose one "small" diameter cartridge for all North
American game, it is of my opinion the 6.5x55 loaded with 160gr bullets
would spank the .270 with a premium 130gr bullet *every* time...unless the
game is pronghorn sized or smaller.
