Re: Shotgun Question...

# Hi Rob,
#
# IMHO the best home defense shot gun is a side by side double barrel,
# with external hammers in 20 gauge.
#
# Easiest to load, easiest safeties - just hammers, simple to fire. Two
# shots, just in case you miss the first time.
#
# Or load up barrel 1 with a less than lethal load, load barrel 2 to
# kill. That way, you can say "I didn't want to kill him, Hit him with
# a bean bag load. He just wouldn't stop." This could save your bacon
# in court or with insurance

Negative! Forget those LTL loads. You will not be shooting anyone unless
you feel your life is about to end. In that case you don't want to be
fooling around with LTL loads. The time wasted on LTL loads can very well
be the time it takes the attacker to kill you or your family. Your
attention should not be on the courts or insurance company. If you honestly
don't feel your life is threatened, don't shoot at all. But, if you
sincerely do fear for your life or safety, your goal is to use the most
effective means to immediately "stop the threat". LTL loads may just piss
him off and he may not give you a second shot. Even with real shotgun
shells, you may need that second shot on him. Also, not all intruders work
alone. In our CCW classes, we teach that for defense, you don't shoot
anyone unless it is a last resort. If you do shoot you aim center of mass
and you keep shooting until you honestly think you have "stopped the
threat". Also, while civil and criminal courts may come into play
afterwards, once the smoke has cleared, our DA says that (in the REAL world)
it simplifies things if there is only one person telling the story of what
happened. It's amazing how a lawsuit attorney will present his client as
the unjust victim of your deadly assault. "My client was just a simple
harmless burglar intending to take a few inexpensive items to buy baby
formula for his starving children and this madman shot him with a lead shot
beanbag specifically intended to cause excruciating pain. Because of this
pain my client won't be able to earn a living for his poor family and
demands $$$$ in compensation."
