You face the same problem a lot of us do these days and that is fining
a place to get a gun re-blued. If you send it out to a name brand
place you will pay top buck and it does not necessarily mean they will
do a good job with out grinding off all the lettering on the gun
either.
Today there are less and less places that do re-bluing because of all
the legal restrictions, gun-smithing license, and all the hand work
that goes into a really go re-blue job.
Your best bet is to solicit opinions from people who have "actually
sent" guns to various gun-smiths for re-bluing before trusting them
with any family heirloom.
I would start by trying to find some one in your local area who has
been in business a very long time. They will generally do a better
job, the time the gun is tied up may be shorter and the price is
usually about half of what you would pay at a name brand shop which
will often tie your gun up for at least 3 months or longer.
If you do send your gun out be sure and pack it up very securely and
If I were you I would ship it in a hard case. By the way the U.S.
Post office will ship the gun for you and at a cheaper rate than
having the gorillas as U.P.S. throw your gun from the front of the
loading trailer to the rear when loading it. I once worked there and
I can tell you of plenty of horror stories including the clowns
dumping the returned guns off on door steps. U.S. mail will notify
you when you get a gun through the mail and you can go down personally
and pick it up.
