Re: Learning reloading - where to start?

I was genuinely lucky when I got started in that a fellow rec.gunner
made me an offer I couldn't refuse. "Hey, before you buy all that
junk, come over and I'll show you how it's done". He spent some time
showing me what to do, then spent some more time watching me. Maybe
you could find somebody where you shoot, or even on rec.guns who would
make you a similar offer. Bonus points for a guy that already loads
your special caliber and/or will loan you a chronograph until you get
one of those also.
In addition to the excellent reloading books that people have
mentioned, I've seen an NRA book on reloading. It's a soft-cover
book, a little thinner than a shooter's bible or gun digest that steps
you through the process. I'd probably look at that and one or two
reloading manuals. Some powder companies (and/or bullet
manufacturers) have load data on the web -- I would buy a book or two
first before going off of the web data. By web data I mean "published
on the web by a powder or bullet company", not Joe Blows blog where
he lists a super-duper load that hasn't blown up his gun (yet).
Another point is to take meticulous notes. I took a break from
reloading for a few years and when I got back into it I found that a
new gun really liked a load I had rejected for a similar gun. I was
able to dig out the data and figure out a load that was "OK" in both
guns without re-doing a lot of experimenting. Of course that can also
be the fun part.
