sorry mods, but I can't snip this message, what is posted below is simply
too relevant to this subject
great post- I have an AR-15 and when first got it, was trying handloaded
ammo not full length resized- it jammed up almost instantly- the forward
assist is USELESS- the human hand is not strong enough, and does not have
enough leverage, for the assist to be of any value- even if you hit the
assist with a HAMMER, it won't chamber a round
the forward assist is the proverbial "t-ts on a bull"

# #The major modification made to the M-16 was the addition of the bolt
# #closing plunger on the upper right corner of the receiver which was a
# #badly needed addition as if the bolt failed to go into battery on the
# #original version there was no way to force it. All you could do was
# #pull the bolt handle back again and hope the next time the bolt went
# #all the way closed.
#
# I think that the forward assist (what you call the bolt closing plunger)
# was one of the worst things the Army did to the m16 design.
#
# The SPORTS procedure needs to be changed so you don't touch the forward
# assist.
#
# The original idea was that if a dented or otherwise sticky round kept
# the bolt from going into battery, all you had to do was pull the
# charging handle back and lose the round, then chamber the next one and
# keep shooting. If that next round does not chamber, then the rounds
# are bad, the chamber is dirty, the extractor is defective, or the
# magazine is defective.
#
# With the forward assist, you now jam a round that may be oversized,
# dirty, or dented, into the chamber that may be dirty as well, creating
# a metal and plastic club. If it does make it into battery, it stands
# a good chance of not extracting when fired.
#
# The only way to unjam it would be to take a cleaning rod out and hammer
# the stuck case from the muzzle end.
