# Hi,
# I have been seeing a lot of these precision seating dies with the
# micrometer adjustments and was wondering if they are really worth
# buying. I am looking for ways to improve my hand loads and at present am
# using standard RCBS die sets in a RCBS Rock Chucker press. I also have
# some Lee die sets that I use.
# I was told by a couple reloaders that I should be using a neck
# sizing die as opposed to my full length sizing dies since I load for
# only one rifle in each caliber. The rifles I use are all bolt action and
# I generally only load one round in the gun at a time. Is my standard
# RCBS Rock Chucker rig good enough or should I start checking out some
# higher grade dies and such? I could care less about the speed of the
# reloading process so I am not interested in some mega-buck turret
# system. I am more interested in consistency. I did purchase a
# chronograph to test things with. I'm curious what others with more
# experience have found. I am willing to step up with respect to dies but
# I don't want to be paying for something that is nothing more then snake
# oil. I have experimented with the powder charge, bullet seating depth,
# and the type of primers I use. I have those parts down. But I feel that
# there may be more and I was told that case prep can also make or break a
# hand load.
# Thanks in advance!

It may depend on what kind of rifle you are using. If heavy barrel
target/varmit rifles they may help to a small degree. For the standard
sporters you would be wasting your money as the guns are not capabile of
being that accurate. Case prep is a big part of good loads for guns that
can benifit from them. Are you turning the necks, weighing the cases to
see if they are all similar weight, then uniforming the flash hole and
primer pockets ? Do you take time to put the finished rounds on V blocks
and check to see if the bullet is really centered in the case ?

Custom guns often have dies made with the same reamers as the chambers are
cut with.

Neck sizing is good for targets, but for general hunting you probably
should full length resize. That is so they will feed smooth and not jam.
