# # Well, yes, .452 is substantially larger, but the Federal 125 grain JHP
# # ..357 Remington Magnum is the king of one shot stoppers, as documented by
# # Ed Sanow and Evan Marshall.
#
# My pet [read flippant] theory on that 125 gr 357M data, is that the
# round makes so much noise from a snub nose revolver, that the shooter
# and perp pause, this gives the perp the chance to fall down before the
# cop double taps him.
*chuckle*
# My second tier theory, is that 125 gr 357 mg ammo fits in a 5 or 6 shot
# revolver as apposed to a semi auto with 16 rounds backed up with another
# 15 in the second magazine. With only 5 or 6 rounds vs 16 or 31 rounds,
# it is a matter of ammo conservation.
There IS something to be said for knowing that you have a limited supply
of shots.
It tends to concentrate the mind.
# My third level theory, is that 125 gr 357 mag ammo is the ammo of small
# town cops, who are older and shoot straighter.
Well, "was" would more be the word these days.
Anymore, almost all cops - at least in my area - carry Glocks, usually
chambered in .40 S&W.
# My forth level theory, is that 357 mag data is mostly old data from a
# long time ago, compared with new data from the new trigger happy double
# tap generation of cops.
The data were gathered using statistics from police action shootings in
which only one shot was taken or only one shot struck.
# Someone else's theory is that the 125 gr bullets would break up with the
# high velocity of the 357 mag.
It depends on the bullet manufacture.
Depending on whether the bullet penetrates into vital organ depth,
disintegration may not necessarily be a bad thing.
It would create multiple wound channels, much as Glasers do.
I know for a fact that Speer Gold Dots hang together remarkably well,
not unlike the vaunted Nosler Partition.
I have shot several different makes of bullets, including Hornady XTP
and the Gold Dot into tree limbs.
When I dug out the XTPs and others, they always had severe core/jacket
separations, with the core usually being shattered as well.
The Gold Dots still have the jacket attached, almost as if it were
welded to the core, and the bullets are classic mushrooms, with little
or no core loss.
Very impressive.
# I know from shooting chickens at the same 1200 fps with 35 gr hollow
# points, that multiple body shots have no visible effect. But shoot that
# sized animal with at 2500 fps, and I can cut the animal in half.
Well, yes, using a .22 is going to show little or no hydrostatic shock
damage.
Do the math.
You are getting 112 fpe with that particular load.
Now, consider that most full power 125 grain .357 magnum loads are
moving out at roughly 1400 fps, generating 544 fpe.
# It also could be that some cops get 1700 fps with 125 gr 357mag, and get
# some shock wave effect.
Not unless said cops are not using revolvers and instead have loaded
their .357 ammo into Marlin 1894 lever action RIFLES!
