Re: my AR-15 challenge

I am doing more or less the same thing. I bought a used AR (SP1 clone)
for $550 a few months ago, sold it for $600 because I was certain I
could build a new one like I wanted (now that I knew enough to know what
I wanted) for less money.

The easy way, as someone else mentioned, is to buy a Model 1 Kit and and
a stripped lower. You would be WAY under $600.

So far here's where I'm at:

Complete used (like new) upper with BCG & CH $300, local FTF
DPMS parts kit $55 shipped
CAR 6-position buttstock $55 shipped
So I'm at $410 and I just need a stripped lower.
I have some 0% lower forgings, but so far I'm too lazy to attempt that.
Stripped lowers start at $77 and go to $120 or more.
So it's possible I could get mine done under $500.

Trouble is, the interest in ARs has exploded, with demand outstripping
supply in some cases as people feel a sense of urgency. So all the
vendors have figured out they could charge more.

#
# On the spur of the moment I bought a Stag lower for $120 and the
# Trigger Parts Kit for $70. This was the only lower for sale and it
# was an impulse purchase. I know very little about Stag and I'm not
# sure if the price was reasonable.
#
# I spoke with a friend about it later and he challenged me to build the
# AR-15, with all new parts, for under $600. There is no money riding
# on this, just bragging rights. We also agreed I could include some
# used parts but I need to stay under $500 if anything is used. I
# already have a tactical stock which we are valuing and $70 for this
# challenge.
#
# I now have a finished lower, with trigger installed and a stock, for
# $260. I just need an upper, barrel, bolt & carrier and the charge
# handle. I have $340 more in my budget ($240 if I buy used parts). I
# don't need a carry handle, rails, or any other add-ons.
#
# Can this be done?
# Did I over pay for the lower parts?
# Can anyone point me to some good resources for cheap parts?
# I'm building a cheap gun so cheap parts and low quality are OK.
