# Hi,
#
# I bought a Marlin Model 60 .22LR semi-automatic rifle today. This is
# my first time using a semiautomatic rifle. Am I supposed to slowly
# release the bolt forward (ie. ride it forward) to chamber the first
# round, or just pull back and let it slam forward? If I ride the bolt
# it's hit or miss whether it jams or chambers the round. I'm afraid if
# a round jams and the bolt slams on it it may crush the rim and fire
# before chambering. What is the proper way to load the first round?
#
# Thanks.

All autoloaders should have the bolt pulled all the way back and released.
Think about it, when the round is fired, the bolt flies back faster than
you can pull it and is then slammed farward by the spring.
Do be sure to point the rifle in a safe direction. I had a 22 Winchester
that got something wrong with the disconnector and it would fire when I
released the bolt. Sometimes 2 or 3 rounds. This was corrected by a
gunsmith and never gave any more problems.
Any gun could have this hapen, not just a 22.
