New rifle jamming

Hi,
I bought a Marlin Model 60 .22LR semi-automatic rifle today. This is
my first time using a semiautomatic rifle. Am I supposed to slowly
release the bolt forward (ie. ride it forward) to chamber the first
round, or just pull back and let it slam forward? If I ride the bolt
it's hit or miss whether it jams or chambers the round. I'm afraid if
a round jams and the bolt slams on it it may crush the rim and fire
before chambering. What is the proper way to load the first round?
Thanks.
