I just took a quick look through the manufacturers and they aren't cheap.
While I can't speak of the current crop, why not look at some classics like
the H&R 999. There's one on gunbroker that's a little worn but it's only
$175. You might be able to do better quality-wise if you look around some.
I've always like this gun which was what I learned to shoot with. Good
sights. Heavy barrel. Good trigger. 9 shot...and this from the '40s and
'50s. And double wow. Some models qualify as C&R. Boy do I feel old.
