# We have bought property in Wyoming where we lived 27 yrs ago when we
# were first married. We will live there part of the year and for at
# least a few entire years. The property is semi-rural being atop a
# 8500' mountain and our nearest neighbor will be about 500' away. The
# times I have been there over the past 10 yrs, they have had warnings
# about Mt Lions and black bear wandering the mountain. I intend to
# wander the mountain too, all over it, even places with no trails.
# So, should I get a gun? I have almost no interest in guns for their
# own sake and own only a .22 rifle that I rarely use for shooting
# cans. I do not want a handgun so if I get anything it would be a long
# gun.
# So, what gun? or no gun?
You will probably never see a mountain lion attack coming so you will not
typically be able to bring a long gun into play. If you are not killed
immediately you could pull a hand gun with luck and shoot the cat who dies
easily. A black bear attack is unlikely but they are easy to kill, most
being killed as targets of opportunity by deer hunters using smaller rounds
like the 30-30. Again a hand gun in a larger size (.357 or larger) would
likely be enough. A 44 mag. might be a good choice. I know you would
prefer a long gun, but a hand gun just seems more likely to be carried and
useful. Alternatively, a 12 gauge with slugs would dispatch either animal
with room to spare.
