# Does anyone here receive "Gun Tests" publication and can comment how
# useful it is?

I get it. A lot of people are critical of it, and rightly so. They often
compare guns that don't really compare and their conclusions are often
wildly biased by petty issues or even what seem to be made-up issues. They
recently changed their rating system from a "Our Pick, Buy, and Don't Buy"
to a letter-style grading system, but their ratings continue to appear to be
pretty much the same, just with a letter grade instead.

The most recent one had a review of three .22 pistols, and the High Standard
recieved the lowest grade (possibly even a D) largely due to accuracy, even
though in their accuracy results it outperformed the other two guns with one
brand of ammo and had equivilent or better performance with the other guns
AND it was the easiest to take down.

My other complaints are inconsistency (I've seen Glocks maligned for having
no safety, I've seen Glocks praised for their safe-action system),
overly-harsh criticism based on minor factory defects that we've all kind of
gotten used to, and that the publication is plain thin -- usually 3
comparison reviews per issue, an editorial and letters to the editor (which
have gotten less frequent recently). Color photos would be nice, and in
this day and age of high-volume custom color printing probably trivial from
a production cost perspective, especially on the uncoated stock they use.

I keep getting it because they review guns you don't see in the color
glossies and there's kind of a no-nonsense attitude towards their reviews
which can be informative if you read with a critical eye (which, if you own
a gun you probably do already).

I think they could improve greatly if they would refine their grading
methods, expand their pages by including other gun-related item reviews in
every issue (eg, a reloading gizmo review, an optics review, ammo/component
review, holsters, etc), always printing letters to the editor, and doing a
little more to solicit manufacturer feedback when they get a defective item.

All-in-all its kind of a love-hate relationship.
