Thanks for the replies!!!
You are both correct; I didn't mention measuring the case length prior
to loading. I don't use the calipers to measure the case length
instead I use the Case Length Tool / trimmer from Lee.
Ok so I called RCBS today and spoke to a very friendly woman (sorry I
forgot her name). I know I don't own RCBS dies but they may have to
change just because she answered my question when the other die and
bullet and shooting magazine wouldn't or couldn't. I have to say the
guys at the local hunting and fishing supply shop was, playing it safe,
but way off the mark.
The RCBS rep knew exactly what the problem was when I explained it to
her. She said I was correct in full length sizing the cases BUT
instead of the 1/4 to 1/3 turn you give the die after you lower the ram
increase it another 1/4 to 1/3. This will push that shoulder back into
place. I asked her what was the best way to not dimple a case while
using the full length die and lube (the obvious was not the load up of
the lube)? She said to only lube the bottom 2/3rd's of the case and
lube inside the case mouth. So, when I got home I tried it one case
but only a 1/4 turn after lowering the ram followed by another 1/4 (a
total of 1/2 after lowering the ram). Primed, charged, and seated a
bullet. Chamber testing did show much improvement. I tried to watch a
little TV, but the problem just kept bothering me. What the hell, I
backed off the die, raised the ram, screwed the die until it hit the
ram, lowered the ram, and spun the die an additional 2/3rd's of a full
turn (from 6 o'clock to 2 o'clock). Lubed up my remaining 6 Winchester
cases (my oldest ones), ran them through the die, primed, charged, and
seated.
Each and every one of the rounds was like brand new factory ammunition.
I was so excited that I logged into Midway and Midsouth to find RCBS
dies (FL, NS, SD) in a 30-06 (my next rifle) and 300 WSM (my cousins
rifle). To my surprise, I found a Body Die from Redding. What the
heck was a Body Die? With no internal parts, this specialized die
would resize the case body without resizing the case mouth or
de-priming. They also recommended purchasing a set of custom
competition shell holders. Uh? Well these shell holders are sold in a
set of varying heights. So the theory is you would use each shell
holder to gradually push the shoulder back into spec. What I really
like about the body concept (I don't own one yet so to me its just a
concept) is there is no lube, it doesn't have to be used before each
reload, and I can still use a collets die to size just the neck. The
set of shell holders are for multiple calibers.
Conclusion, I will be ordering two sets of RCBS dies for the 30
calibers, 1 Body Die, and set of Redding shell holders for the 22-250.
Thank you both very much for responding to my call for help. Again you
were both correct in that the case just needed a little more lovin'. I
subscribe to another news group for MS Access Professionals, and some
of the members were just complaining about how other weren't
appreciating the help they were receiving. So thank you thank you
thank you. Hopefully, one day I can pay it forward.
My next reloading challenge, the 6XC. It will have to wait though, as
a custom rifle is also required.
Cheers
BJ
