# # The sign says, "ALL MILITARY RIFLES -- LOAD 5 ONLY." I have an old
# # SKS, because that's all I can afford. If I load six by accident, the
# # rangemaster acts like I just stole his sweet daughter's virginity. My
# # good friend is quite wealthy, and he paid cash for his $1,700 Iwo Jima
# # M1 Limited Edition Garand, and he throws in his 8 rounds as fast as he
# # can, and the same rangemaster just smiles vacantly, like it's some sort
# # of fantasy. The rangemaster is old, like a waiter at the Last Supper,
# # so I'm not likely to change this guy's personality.
# #
# # Any thoughts?
#
#
# Two separate issues:
#
# Safety - My range has a 5-round limit. Since guns can hold so many different
# amounts of ammo, and some people bring more than one gun, it's entirely
# possible for someone to forget how many rounds they loaded. If there's a
# consistent 5-round rule, it's less likely there'll be an accident.

At the range I go to, the RO simply announces the range will
go cold in x minutes, so close out your groups / shoot the
magazine or cylinder empty before the range is called cold;
and/or when it is called cold then drop the magazine and/or
completely clear the weapon, open all breeches/cylinders and
step behind the line. Then the RO walks the line to check
the status of the guns, Then he calls the range clear to go
forward and inspect targets.

If you've additional weapons setting on the
bench/shelf/table other than the one you're currently
shooting, then drop the mag(s) and/or otherwise completely
clear them, lock open the breech (if possible) and keep
it(them) pointed down range; or then optionally stow in
their case, or if long gun then optionally set on the rifle
rack.

Keep your station as uncluttered with guns as reasonable.
Observe the 4 rules...
