Re: Dumb Q: Can you "Build-Your-Own" Rifle?

Brian, if the terrain you plan to hunt is wooded, or if something
besides large game is on the agenda (birds, rabbits, squirrels, etc.),
focus on finding a break action single shot. Examples:

A Rossi matched pair single shot rifle in 22LR/20 gauge. This is one
receiver and two barrels. You can practice with the 22LR and small
game hunt for very little cash spent on ammo (500 rounds costs less
than $10). You can use the 20 gauge barrel for larger game (slugs,
buckshot), and birds (turkey, upland, waterfowl). With a bit of
searching, you should be able to find this for under $150.

Similarlly, an NEF Pardner break action shotgun. I see them frequently
at gun shows, used, for $50 to $75. You can use such a gun with slugs,
buckshot, or birdshot, and pretty much hunt anything. I have one in
20ga (purchased at a gun show for $60), and I consider it a useful
backup gun for any type of short range hunting. As long as you are not
out in open country stalking big game, it would suffice for many
hunting tasks.

If you are thinking about big game, and the shots are anticipated to be
ranges over 75 yards, a surplus Russian (or Polish or Hungarian or
Romanian) Mosin Nagant M44 or M38. You can find these online, at
gunshows, and at gun shops. They are somewhat crude in appearance, but
reliable, powerful and plenty accurate enough to hunt. 100 rounds of
Russian soft point ammo won't set you back much more than $20.

If you can't swing an initial outlay of $100, or you want to wait for
something a little further up the deer rifle food chain, start putting
$5/week in a cookie jar. By the time hunting season opens in 2007,
you'll have plenty for an entry level rifle from WalMart, such as a
Savage/Stevens bolt action with a scope, or a Marlin 30-30.

Remember to put aside some dough for practice ammo and your hunting
license.

Good luck. Get yourself a hunting gun, get proficient with it, and get
out in the woods.
