# I'm looking form the impossible here... a 1911 for around $500.
# The Mil-Spec fills that bill nicely in my mind. However... Am I missing
# out on another maker of 1911's? Are there any others in that price
# range that might be better? I will be having some custom work done to
# make it a CCW gun.
Back in the day (when all 1911s were made by Colt and a Lightweight
Commander was the only thing smaller) I carried a Colt 1911 concealed
for work. Not sure I'd want to work that hard these days with so many
other more convenient yet capable choices available. Don't get me
wrong, every serious pistolero ought to own a 1911, but it's the
airweight J-frame or Kahr that ends up in your jacket pocket when you
swing by the Kwikmart at 2 am. Still a fella can casually conceal a
steel 1911 if he buys a good holster and a better belt. As others have
mentioned there are myriad choices available to you for 1911s that run
from lightly tuned up to totally tricked out of the box. Might be
better to decide how much you are willing to spend on customizing a
stock gun and use your total budget to buy a such a gun ready to go,
off the shelf, with a factory warrantee.
