It's all over the map, but yes I'd say Remington does chamber their rifles
with a lot of leade to the lands. My two custom-barreled rifles have such
short freebore that with some bullets I have a hard time loading to the
nominal OAL for a cartridge! Having said that, I have gotten great accuracy
with factory M700's, freebore or not. Just mess with the OAL and you'll hit
some sweet spots. My 30-06, before it got the new barrel, shot best well
off the lands. My .358 BLR was the same way, it hated being loaded up near
the lands but shot OK with the bullet pulled back some. So nothing is
written in stone. It might shoot just fine with the bullet way off the
lands.

If it bugs you too much, $400-$500 or so will get a new premium barrel in
the profile of your choice installed on the rifle. I had Pac-Nor do the
work on two of my rifles and am very pleased with the result.
