Re: Who Does Checkering?

With checkering tools, sort of like miniature files in the end of a long
stem tool handle. They usually cut two or more grooves simultaneously, so
the grooves are kept at the correct spacing. When kept clean and used with
care, they work very well. I checkered a lot of plain 2x4's and scrap wood
before trying a real gunstock. It's not too difficult, just practice until
you're consistently getting good results before tackling a serious job.

The other method is pressing, which requires a large stock jig and pressing
machine. The initial setup costs are high, but that's quickly recovered with
the quantity that can be made this way. The main drawback is pressed
checkering can't replicate the high definition of cut checkering, especially
when hand-cut by someone with endless patience and an accurate eye. This is
how the big boys do it, us peons still hand-cut. The exception may be
Winchester, bought the wife a 9422 a few years ago, the checkering appears
to be cut. Very nicely done, to say the least.

After a while you'll be able to tell the difference between pressed and cut
checkering. Cut checkering is very sharp and angular with high definition,
pressed checkering is usually shallower and will have more rounded crests
and may have -very- small areas where the surface grain cracked.

Word to the wise: Do NOT allow your significant other learn the full range
of your skills, especially with checkering. For a while, she wanted every
wood box checkered, knife & drawer handles, etc. I declared a moratorium
when the subject of the shovel came up.

For more information, try searching for dembart checkering on Google.

# More important: How's it [checkering] done? Seems like magic to me.
