# So: for a guy wanting a .30-30 bolt action, would I be better served to
# keep waiting on a Rem 788 to pop up, or is the side-mounting of the
# scope for the Savage really that big of a deal?
#
I don't like side mounts...and would avoid a rifle needing one. That said,
the 30-30 Winchester is pretty much a short range cartridge, you probably
don't need a scope at the ranges the cartridge is effective at..150 yards or
so.
Just wondering, why does the Savage 340 need a side mount? Can't a gunsmith
drill and tap the receiver for top mount?
The 788 Remington was discontinued many years ago. It was a inexpensive
rifle that probably sold new for $150. Sometime since then, shooters found
this homely rifle was rather accurate and available pretty cheaply...and it
became a cult favorite...then prices shot up. Last time I saw one for sale,
the asking price was over $400...which is way more than I'd be willing to
pay for a rifle with a rather weak lockup.
You will probably have better luck shopping on Gunbroker.com or Auction Arms
to find what you want.
