The M1 was originally designed with a 20 round enbloc clip. The US
Army, in it's infinite wisdom, had him reduce that to 8 rounds so that
the magazine would not protrude from the bottom of the rifle. They did
this so that they would not have to change the manual of arms and the
associated training materials.
Or so I have heard...
The enbloc clip system is actually superior to a detachable magazine
for a soldier who is on foot. He doesn't have to carry his empty
magazines about with him until he has time to refill them. Supplies of
fresh ammunition were furnished already packed in clips and bandoleers,
ready to be used.
