An M-14 mag sticks out a lot and snags on a lot of stuff and is harder
to shoot prone. The M1 is smooth, little to snag, held a lot of ammo
for the time, and shooters had no trouble loading 2 rds in a M1 enbloc
clip. The philosophy was that the army supplied all ammo pre-loaded and
it worked well in practice in combat.
