Re: Reloading 44 special to maximum values

....for the .44 Special afficionados in the audience.

For large frame guns: Lyman 429421 over 10.0 grains of Winchester 540
for 900 fps (3") to 1030 fps (7 1/2") and excellent accuracy
For the S&W 696: the Nosler 200 grain HP over 8.0 grains of Unique for
a little over 900 fps -- dandy accuracy and thump from the snubby.
For light target work and short range vermin perforation: the Lee 212
grain wadcutter over 3.8 grains of Red Dot for about 650 fps.

My loads for my 24/624 are a 250 gr. swc pushed by 7.5 grs. of unique
and a 180 gr. jhp pushed by 16 grs. of 2400. I only use the unique
loads in my 696 and rossi 720.

I noticed that National Bullet Co. offers a 190 Gr. cast wadcutter
(full WC, not an SWC) for the .44. Has anyone had any experience with
this? I'm considering this as a mild target load in my S&W 624. If
anyone has any data available (preferably using Unique or Bullseye) it
would be much appreciated.

and work up to the load you find shoots best using the National 190
gr. bullet.

As Joe mentioned below, the Lee .44 wadcutter is a fine bullet. The
best load I've found to date is 3.8 grains of Red Dot (about 650 fps).
4.0 grains of Bullseye is also a good accurate load, as is 4.5 grains
of W231. I tried 5.0 grains of Unique, but in my guns, found this
combination to be inconsistant.

..44 Spl. WC bullet seating question
Thu Nov 25 20:09:39 1999

Last week, I received excellent loading information from the gentlemen
at this site for a 190 Gr. .44 Spl. caliber WC (full wadcutter) bullet
that I want to experiment with. The question I neglected to ask was
how should I seat this bullet....flush with the case mouth with a
moderate crimp (as with a .38 WC), or should I crimp in the groove,
allowing about 1/8" of the bullet to protrude from the case. I will be
using 4.0 Gr. of Bullseye as recommended.

The best answer is ....
Thu Nov 25 21:38:50 1999

...."Yes." In other words, load some of each, shoot them and determine
which is more accurate. I suspect that a tight crimp in the bullet's
crimping groove will produce the better groups, but the only way to be
sure is to try both.

I just picked up my new (old) S&W 3rd model hand ejector on Saturday
(I really hate that one gun a month law). Ordered a caliber change kit
for my Dillon on Friday. On Sunday I picked up 1000 240 grain SWC and
500 185 grain wadcutters. Now I need some input from you all on loads.
I need a general purpose/practice load using 240 grain SWC, and a
light paper punching load using 185 grain full wadcutters. Any help?
Remember this gun was made in 1939, and I don't want to wear it out
prematurely. Thanks in advance to all you .44 Spl fans.

Mon Dec 13 07:02:35 1999

For lighter loads with the 240 grain bullet, Elmer Keith's load of 5
grains of Bullseye has worked for me. 5.3 grains of either Win. 231 or
HP-38 is also good.

These work good in my hand ejectors. I used ww case and Federal 150
primers with 7.1 grns of IMR 800X and a Lyman 429421 bullet. This load
is approximated at 800 fps. The other load I have used a lot is in a
ww case, Winchester large pistol primers, 7.1 grns of HS6, with the
same Lyman 429421 bullet. This load is approximated at 700 fps. These
have been accurate and comfortable to shoot in my guns.

First off, congratulations on acquiring a fine revolver! A perenial
favorite for .44 Special is Lyman's 429421 (250 Keith SWC) over 6.5
grains of Unique for about 750 fps. This load is typically very
accurate. Another good one is 5.0 grains of W231 under the same
bullet, for about the same speed (this one is generally a little
cleaner than the Unique load).

I've never worked with 185 grain WC's, but I have done quite a bit
with Lee's 210 grain WC in .44 Special. The best load I've found to
date is 3.8 grains of Red Dot. Very accurate with a velocity of about
630 fps, this load makes an outstanding short-range small-game load.

I use 4.8 grains of HP-38 with 240 grain wadcutter for a little over
700 fps and is very accurate.

As to loads, my favorites(in currently owned M624 and M24) with 240gr
SWC are 6.6 gr Unique, 5.6 gr WW231 and 4.5gr Bullseye. All are
pleasantly mild. I plan to use same in the 1926 Model.
I expect you'll see a 2 to 3 inch difference in the point of impact
with the 240 versus the 185 grain bullets. I think the 240s will shoot
to point of aim while the 185s will be a bit low.

This load should be safe in any large frame .44 (not for the Charter
