## The cited posts are correct- the only additional fact needed is that a
## shot that destroys the heart leaves about a 12 second blood supply in
## the brain, which is plenty of time for him to empty a clip or stick a
## knife in you. Incapacation by blood loss elsewhere is even slower.
## To really stop someone immediately you need to hit a critical nerve
## center or a skeletal area. With a .32, the only reasonable chance is
## an FMJ to the brain- with a .45 you have a few more options. If you
## doubt this, check with a deer hunter- almost all of us have seen
## fatally shot deer run for several minutes, and a rifle bullet has a
## lot more power than a pistol.

#I don't think anyone disagrees with what you are saying. In
#past posts on many occasions, by myself and others, here and
#on tacticalforums and elsewhere, rapid blood loss has always
#been discussed in relation, either directly or by
#assumption, to a cns or head shot.
#
#However, actually making such a shot with a handgun in a
#tactical or defensive situation has a low order of
#probability. Unless you have had a high order of training
#and real life tactical experience, trying to shoot a rapidly
#moving assailant in the head or spine while you're under
#stress with loss of motor control is not a good option. This
#is why it is generally recommended that one carry a weapon
#chambered for 9x19mm or .38 Special as a *bare minimum*
#(some exception for a BUG), and other than for specific
#tactical situations to train to use COM shots.
I agree that the CNS shot is not easy, but consider this: In the US
generally, a person can only use deadly force legally when it is
necessary to save himself or another from imminent death or great
bodily harm (obviously this is a summary of volumes of legal
complexity) thus in most cases you are going to be dealing with an
armed assailant who can kill or seriously injure you while he dies.
This is why I carry a .45. The Army taught us "two rounds to the gut,
and one to the head, shoot center of mass and you are dead" It is bad
poetry, but the point is valid. There are valid reasons why boximg
has long forbidden blows below the belt- they are very painful and
tend to bend the assailant over, exposing him to a clean head shot.
