My favorite rifle is a 721 that was reamed out to a "300 ICL". My hunting
partner has carried his Dad's 721 in 300 H&H for almost 40 years and has
whacked numerous deer and elk with it. There is nothing wrong with that
round, and it lies somewhere between the '06 and the 300 Win mag in
ballistics. Handloaders can get right at 3000 FPS out of a 180 gr bullet,
but the 165 is considered the optimum round for the caliber. My 721 is
easily the most accurate mag caliber I have ever seen, and my partner's gun
shoots inside of an inch. Another friend with a 721 in '06 swears by his
gun, and proclaims it to be a "tack driver". These are plai guns that were
the "poor mans" 700. They are considered to have one of the strongest
actions ever made, and are very rugged. They will lay right into a stock
made for a 700, and the floor plate from a 700 will go on there too. My
model was one of a very few made with a "semi-bull" barrel, and it commands
a few more bucks in that configuration. Don't hesitate to buy one in good
condition. Also, the short action 721 is a collectors item of sorts, and
goes for a few more bucks too. I don't know anyone who has had one of those.
