Hi Doug:
I'm no mathematician but I think you are wrong that the forward
velocity of a bullet is zero at its maximum range. If the bullet were
falling straight down at that point you would be right. But it will
not be falling straight down, it will hit the ground still stabilized
and at some angle, so it will still have some foward velocity.
Picture it this way. You shoot it over a big level field. Max range,
1500 yards (or whatever) when it hits the level ground. Now you shoot
it at the same 20 degrees (or whatever) elevation over the Grand
Canyon. At 1500 yards it does not hit the ground but continues forward
and down for some additional distance. So it still has some forward
velocity until it loses all stability and just drops straight down to
the canyon floor.
