Welcome to shooting sports! I hope you have a long and happy
experience.
In reference to question 3, the M16 (or AR15) nearly always fire the
..223, while the AK47 (as well as the SKS and others) fire the 7.62x39
round. You can compare the two here:

In addition, if you enter .223 vs 7.62x39 into either Google or Google
Groups, you'll be up to your ears in reading! My personal preference
is for the commie cartridge 7.62x39 over the .223, but I'd argue the
experience of finding which you prefer is part of the fun. As far as
"distance," that's really subjective. What's amazing at 100, 200, or
even 300 yards may be woefully inadequate at 500.
