# # # # Yeah, it's like the folks that are always asking if they can
# help you # # # find something. Look: I know what I want. I should not
# have to get # # # help to find it. If I can't find it by looking
# around (in the places # # # that make sense for it to be), you did a
# crappy job laying out your # # # store. Don't bother me unless I ask
# for help. Rather, spend your time # # # correcting your lousy
# inventory. # # # Speaking of which, I noticed that ***'s had the
# cleaning supplies # # # with the paintball guns, not next to the
# ammo. I almost missed it, # # # and they almost did not get a
# purchase. # #
# # # That's a) for people on commission b) a loss prevention technique
# # # taught/used/expected in a vast number of retail establishments.
# #
# # I, for one, don't care what or why it is. I care only that being
# # accosted by a salesman pisses me off.
# #
# # #Don't take it personally. :)
# #
# # I do. (note the deliberate lack of a smiley)
# #
# # A business, ANY business, gets exactly three chances from me on that
# # score before losing my patronage forever. The first unsolicited
# "Can I # help you?" or similar that I get on a visit to a store gets
# a "No. If # and when I want a salesman, I'll come find one" that's
# deliberately # delivered in tones intended to make a bucket full of
# liquid nitrogen and # glass shards seem warm and fuzzy by comparison.
# The second gets whatever # I happen to be holding, if anything,
# dropped on the floor, regardless of # what it is or where I happen to
# be standing, and me walking out the door # while loudly proclaiming
# exactly why I'm leaving without buying # anything. *IF* I ever enter
# that business again (unlikely, but has # happened on a couple of
# occasions), the first unsolicited "may I help # you" gets a request
# for a manager, and when he/she/they arrive, they get # a rundown of
# exactly why I'll be leaving today without buying anything, # and why
# that business won't ever see so much as a nickel out of my # pocket.
# "Cling-on" salesmen are why I don't do business with Radio Shack #
# anymore. #
# # Quite simply, in my world view, a salesman is a creature that
# should be # exactly like a butler or maid: unseen and unheard unless
# I'm # specifically seeking one. Until I ask for assistance, I don't
# want it, I # don't need it, and I won't tolerate someone hovering
# over me waiting for # a chance to offer it. When I want/need a
# salesman, I'll come looking for # one. Until then, I don't even want
# to know they exist. On one of the # extremely rare occasions when I
# actually *DO* request assistance, I # expect them to answer my
# question with something like "Aisle five, on # the peg-rack halfway
# down on the left side, just above belly-button # height from the
# floor", or "Those would be in automotive, near the # hubcap polish
# and fuzzy dice" THEN WALK AWAY. DO NOT hover over me. DO # NOT
# attempt to sell me batteries. DO NOT attempt to strike up a #
# conversation. DO NOT attempt to tell me about the great sale on
# <insert # whatever it is> in <whatever department>. Simply direct me
# to the # product I asked about, then fade. Do that and nothing more,
# and you've # performed your duties as a salesman to perfection in my
# eyes. #
# And most of the stores don't mind if you go away and not come back.
# In fact most of them hope you will do just that.
#
# My sales people don't hover, but, they are instructed to ask if they
# can help.
# If they can they are instructed to show the customer where the
# product is.
#
# You are the type of cutomer I neither want or need.
I agree. One of my jobs is retail, and while I work in the back, our people
are *required* to greet "customers". If the managers are around, they are
also required to talk about the merchandise, or offer assistance. I think
it's unfair to treat $8/hour employees rudely. They are doing what they are
*required* to do, in some cases, and are unlikely to risk their jobs over
someone with a stick up his/her ***. I also don't like to be "hovered"
around, and if I feel spied upon, I will leave the store--but a simple "do
you need assistance" is fine. <especially since sometimes finding an
employee on demand is near impossible>
