Check out this site for details on how to get a gun license, and which
type you need to get.

http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca

Then if you want to find out exactly what the laws governing firearms
ownership in Canada are, go to the ministry of justice site and use
the federal law search engine. Specifically, use the title keyword
"Firearms".

# Do I have to take a gun safety course or something?

The course itself (I understand it's been split into two courses now)
isn't 100% required, but it is recommended. You will have to take a
test though, with a practical part (where you demonstrate you know how
to handle a gun safely in some mock scenarios) and a multiple choice
part. Pass is a 75% on the multiple guess part, but it isn't hard for
most people who have ever handled a gun and know how to read. The
only questions in the question pool that might throw people are the
legal questions, the statistical questions, and the historical
firearms questions (including flintlocks and cannons).

#Are there restrictions on type's of guns you can own, is it legal to
#own a .50 caliber like in the US?

Yes there are restrictions, but it would take too much time to discuss
them all.

As for whether it's legal to own a 50cal firearm in Canada? That
depends on the type.

If you're eyeing a $10,000US 50cal Barrett bolt action, forget it.
All firearms chambering .50BMG are on the "bad gun" list. I presume
(though can't be sure) that means the 12.7x180mm Russian equivalent is
out too. There are a few exempt full auto WW2 era Browning machine
guns in civilian hands, but those guys were got their permits in the
60s and were grandfathered in -- ie. When they die, those guns die
with them.

If you want a Desert Eagle in .50AE, that's not too much of a problem.
As a handgun, it's a restricted weapon, so you'll have to deal with
more regulations and ...erm... restrictions, but no more than any
other handgun.

If you want a .500S&W, I'd suggest you wait. They're fairly rare even
in the USA, and I don't know if any have ever been imported into
Canada. Couple that with the anti-gun nutjobs flipping out and making
a big deal of it in their lobbying efforts (never mind that it's way
too heavy and bulky to use in a crime), and you've got a prime
candidate for the gov't to "ban by order in council" (ie. it's banned
because they felt like it). It's current status is assumed to be
restricted.

Then there's a whole bunch of 50cal black powder long arms and
pistols. Those are legal too, within the restrictions imposed by
their respective regulation classes.
