# Please excuse my lack of knowledge and experience.
#
# 1) What is bluing?
#
A chemical process for coloring and protecting steel.
# 2) Is this a *good* thing or a *bad* thing?
#
It does help to prevent rust, but you still need to keep the guns oiled.
# 3) I have heard of great ways of taking "it" off, and putting "it" on.
# Why would you do either? I feel like I'm in a rifle Hokey-Pokey :-)
#
Bluing is usually removed as part the process of refurbishing firearms.
# Invariably, someone asks why! I've been drooling over a couple of
# Mil-Surp rifles lately, and I'm thinking about a first purchase. I
# want to know what I need to know to make the experience a good one, and
# I'm hoping those of you who are chuckling about my questions remember
# your first Mil-Surp rifle, too.
My first choice would be an FN-FAL or variant. It's heavy, but will fire
under almost all conditions and fires a cartridge that isn't blown off
course after 300 metres.
I couldn't afford one of those, so I have an M1A. (g).
