Both .17 HM2 and .22 Mag ammunition are more expensive than .22LR. And
I very likely can save enough money in using .22LR ammunition in the
beginner period to recover the cost of a .22LR rifle.

In one of my previous message in this thread, I have calculated that
..17 HMR ammunition is so expensive that I can quickly recover the cost
of a .22LR rifle if I use .22LR instead of .17 HMR. And I find that .17
HM2 is just slightly cheaper than .17 HMR, and .22 Mag is just slightly
cheaper than .17 HM2 but is still twice as much as .22LR. This means I
will likely save enough money to buy a .22LR rifle in the beginner
period if I use .22LR ammunition instead of .17 HM2 or .22 Mag.

Having said that, I "probably" will consider .17 HMR or .17 HM2 as my
"step-up" from .22LR when I later decide to start shooting at
100-yd-or-farther target. The reason is that they cost less than
centerfire and I am not likely to reload centerfire (no time to do
this).

Thanks for the suggestion though.

By the way, I am still debating in my head to ask myself whether
shooting at a target at 100-yd is realistic for me if I use a .22LR
rifle (such as a CZ-452 American). If I find that this is not a
realistic option, I may decide to use a .22 rimfire style scope or a
peep sight and forget about the variable-power scope.
