# # What's the right magnification power of a scope for targets at both
# # 50-yd and 100-yd? Here, I am assuming that I should get a "fixed"
# # power scope instead of a "variable" power scope. Obviously, I prefer
# # to get one scope that can do both 50-yd and 100-yd instead of one scope
# # for each target distance -- if this is possible. The club that I am
# # planning to join doesn't have 25-yd range; therefore, the scope doesn't
# # need to be able to handle 25-yd. I am under the impression that I
# # should look for a scope that has high magnification power for target
# # shooting.
#
# 4x scope sounds right ...
After the exchange on this thread earlier in the week, I got an itch to
shoot my .22 with a big scope,
so I went to the range, shot a few shots with the 4X that was OK... the 5
shots looked like a ragged hole at 25 yds.
OH, here's a fun game... if your club allows it.... fill regular aluminum
soda cans with water and shoot them with a .22, they blow up and spray water
yards in all direction (a gallon milk jug and a deer rifle is even more
impressive) I call it recreational irrigation.
then I took the 4X off and shot a few with the iron sights (barrel mounted
notch rear, typical hunting sights)
that was fun
then I put the 6-24x50 BSA on it. (you need taller rings for that one)
and I was reminded why I HATE shooting scope in competition....
the higher power makes your wobble much much much much MUCH MUCH more
visible, which causes you to jerk the shot to try to catch it.... (I was
using a front sand bag rest)
also you can see that those shots aren't THAT close together, in fact it is
very disconcerting (I was using cheap ammo and a sporter rifle and wobbling
a LOT) to fire a shot and see it go somewhere other than where it was
intended.... I don't mean to another guys target, but at full magnification
you can see a LOT and if one bullet is 1" from another there is a lot of
blank target visible in the scope.
so I played at 25yds & 50yds on our pistol range, I was too lazy to go over
to the smallbore range (50-100yds) and it was too hot at noon in Phoenix
(110 or so) to continue, so I fired about 65 rds of pistol and 150 rds of
...22 in the 1.5 hours I was there and that included unloading the truck,
drinking water, set up, swapping scopes, drinking more water, evaluating the
targets, trying different ammo, drinking more water, putting everything away
etc.
The GREAT thing about a target scope is the big adjustment knobs, most 4X
sporter scopes are designed for set-and-forget. But too much power does NOT
make the gun more accurate.
Have fun
