A softmod requires a working HD so that you can boot to the point where the exploit will work.
But a hard mod will let you boot from a CD-R even with a brand new blank hard drive, or (possibly) even with no hard drive at all. The best part is that most hard mods need only one or two wires soldered to the board, the rest being on the LPC header. So you can "borrow" a working mod chip to format and load and lock a new hard drive, then remove it when you're done. (but you're still stuck with the 130 gig limit when you go back to the original BIOS, even with a softmod)
Well, definitely something to think about. I doubt I'll do anything any time soon, to me it just doesn't seem like the modded Xbox could do anything that my laptop couldn't. Granted, it'd be nice to have my laptop hooked up to the HDTV via component cables and all, but I do just fine with it going S-Video to my SDTV right now.
Thanks for the info though, I'll hold on to it just in case I ever decide to go for it. :)
