Well, I got the gamesaves copied to the hard drive. And I got into
emergency linux using the mechassault. The keyboard doesn't work
there, so there isn't anything to be done there except telnet to
obtain the hard drive key. I can't be bothered. If it dies, it
dies.

That's as far as I've been able to get so far. There are 2 basic
problems. The first is the sheer # of instructionals out there. Which
one do you use? The other problem is figuring out what files are
needed. You end up doing tons of downloading.

Yeah, and many others, are the issues I hear about when softmodding.
This is exactly why I haven't put any serious thought in to doing it.

I found a pretty cool hack that uses the action replay software to
write files to a flash drive.

I couldn't get it to work, but apparently others did.

That's definitely encouraging, obtaining the AR was one of the main
reasons(along with how difficult the softmod can be) I didn't want to
get in to it.

I went the softmod route with an AR and the only real problem I had was
with Windows recognizing the memory card. Had to Google around to fix
that one.

If someone would have told me years ago that I would have a "magic box"
under my TV that would play all the NES, SNES, SMS, Genesis, arcade,
Atari, etc. games I ever wanted AND I wouldn't even have to get up to
change them I would've never, ever believed it.

But sure enough. It's a great time to be alive. =)

Man, this discussion's got legs. I'll see if I can start a new google
group, so we can finish it up :D

OK, he's modded. Evolution X is running.

It wasn't all that difficult.

Get yourself a 256meg lexar jumpdrive secure, have the xbox format it,
copy the udata.zip file to it using the instant replay hack. Put in
the proper mechassault cd. Choose install linux. That's about it.

I don't have any software that I can run right now, just the
dashboard.
Bringing software onto the xbox's hard disk could prove to be a bit
tricky. Apparently, the thomson drive doesn't like cd-rs or cdrws. It
likes dvds and that's about that. I have no dvd burner in my computer.
Ack!
Perhaps I can get them over there a flash drive. We'll see.

It figures I would do this now. I have to work 4 12-hour days starting
tommorrow night. Man, I am gonna be exploding over this. Oh, well.
Somebody has to pay for all this *** :)
