64 stuff has to be approached a bit differently. For starters, you're
mainly a Sega collector and Sega stuff has always come with pretty
indestructable boxes. They get beat up but they don't look *that*
bad. 64 boxes are the flimsiest of all game boxes possibly. They did
almost all get beat up and they *DO* look *that* bad. Worse, they did
a terrible job of protecting the games and manuals. The boxes are so
wimpy that a simple price sticker from EB or TRU or something is
enough to significantly damage the box.
Oh, I agree...the SNES boxing was about the same way.
At least the snes boxes (although older) have the cardboard thingies
in there that provide at least a little crush protection. SNES boxes
were actually quite ugly. Plain black on almost all of 'em. Donkey
Kong Country seems to me to be the transition box where the n64 box
was born. It really does look like a 64 box.
As if all that wasn't bad enough the stuff is a LOT rarer than many
think that it is. Try comparing the rarity on Ebay for a supposedly
rare NES game like Bubble Bobble against the n64 Bust-a-move '99 game.
It's a joke. I don't think people realize how poorly the games sold at
retail. This is illustrated by the number of ex-rentals that you come
across when you are hunting them down. And man, they are not usually
desirable - especially when they have the dreaded blockbuster shields
on them. Ugh.
Oh man, yeah, those things are hell getting off. Once you do get them
off, then you have to try to get that bull*** off that they leave
behind. Sucks ass.
Honestly, if they aren't imports or something with similar rarity, I
usually won't even be bothered with them. I just get rid of them.
When I started buying he *** like 4-5 years ago, I felt like I was
the only person on the planet collecting from the system. Right now,
there's a lot of new collectors coming in. And the supplies just
aren't there for them. A price spike is definitely coming. I have
mixed feelings about it. On the one hand it will increase the value of
my collection significantly. On the other hand, my collection isn't
quite finished! There's still more pieces that I want to add. I don't
want to pay horrific sums for the stuff. One of the reasons I started
collecting this *** is because it was cheap.
That buddy of mine who sold me the N64, he has shitloads of N64
carts(some with the boxes and manuals). He has said he is going to start
selling it all off at some point. I'll let you know when this happens
and shoot you a list, if you're interested. He normally doesn't charge
but maybe $5 a game.
Yeah, let me know what he has.
A few weeks ago, I got a mint cart and a mint manual, and an excellent
condition box for international track and field 2000. This comes after
about 4 years of searching and battling over it, cycling through bad
condition prospects, etc. And finally the job was done. I couldn't
believe I was finally finished with that one. I still can't believe
it. 64 stuff in the right condition has an aura about it. It's hard
to describe it to a non-collector or someone who just isn't interested
in the system.
Well, I can dig it, like I said at one point I was a hardcore collector
who wouldn't buy *anything* that wasn't complete, or was even slightly
damaged. Over the years though, like I mentioned, I've just sort of let
go of that standard...no knock to you, or anyone else who still does it.
I certainly respect the drive and high standards ya'll have on your
gaming collection, I just don't personally subscribe to it all anymore :)

I think it depends mostly on the size of the collection. The n64 set
is a small one. Only about 300 games released in the US. Of these,
roughly about 50 of them can be ignored. An even smaller set is the
Atari 7800 with roughly about 65 games.
Honestly, I never worry about getting boxes or manuals for most games
for other platforms. Nor do I concern myself with the conditions of
these if I do happen to get them. The other systems just don't have
the aura. Thank God cause it would cost me a fortune if they did :D
