HOW TO PLAY THE SEGA GENESIS ® GAME “JOHN MADDEN FOOTBALLTM”
While viewing the TITLE SCREEN press the START BUTTON on CONTROLLER 1 to raise the OPTION SCREEN. Use the control pad to move the cursor to highlight CHOOSE SEASON MODE, CHOOSE PLAYER, CHOOSE HOME TEAM, CHOOSE HOME PLAYER, or CHOOSE QUARTER LENGTH. If your selection is CHOOSE SEASON MODE press the control pad right or left to select REGULAR SEASON, SUDDEN DEATH, or PLAY-OFF. If your selection is REGULAR SEASON or SUDDEN DEATH press the START BUTTON to raise the SCOUTING REPORT SCREEN then press the A BUTTON to begin gameplay. If your selection is PLAY-OFF press the START BUTTON to raise the TEAM PLAY-OFF SCREEN. Press the C BUTTON to raise the SCOUTING REPORT SCREEN. If your selection is CHOOSE VISITING TEAM use the control pad right to scroll through available opponents. If your selection is CHOOSE HOME TEAM use the control pad to scroll through the 17 available teams. If your selection is CHOOSE HOME PLAYER (coach), use the control pad to select PLAYER1, PLAYER 2, or JOHN MADDEN, (PLAYER 1 will coach the home team). If your selection is CHOOSE QUARTER LENGTH use the control pad to select FIVE MINUTES or FIFTEEN MINUTES. Once you have completed your selections press the START BUTTON to begin gameplay.
USING THE CONTROLLER(s)
START BUTTON- Raise TIME OUT SCREEN
OFFENSE: A BUTTON- Call audible play option, Call audible trick play, Runner dives, Pass to receiver A, Diving catch, Call time out
B BUTTON- Audible hut, Call audible quick pass, Runner spins off tackle, Pass to receiver B
C BUTTON- Kick ball, Call audible on side kick, Tackle, Raise passing windows, Pass to receiver C, Jump to catch pass
DEFENSE: A BUTTON- Call audible play option, Call audible play against the run, Diving tackle
B BUTTON- Call audible blitz play, Select the control of defensive player closest to the ball
C BUTTON- Calls audible blitz play (stunt), Block a kick or pass
CONTROL PAD +
Press Right-Move right, Select different FORMATION, SET, or PLAY options
Press Left- Move left, Select different FORMATION, SET, or PLAY options
Press up- Move up Press Down- Move down
PLAYING THE GAME
The home team receives the kick-off. Press the C BUTTON to charge the power meter during kick-off, (the position of the white cursor on the power meter will determine the force of the kick). Use the control pad to line up the directional cursor and determine the direction of your kick. Status displays are exhibited across the top of the action screen showing 3 offensive and defensive play selection screens with the team name, down, yards to go, yard marker, and score, (selection screens are designated A,B or C). Use the control pad to scroll through offensive or defensive plays, (CHOOSE SET). SET selection indicates the type of players needed on the field. Once you have selected your players press the corresponding A, B, or C BUTTON to raise CHOOSE FORMATION, (use the control pad to scroll through CHOOSE FORMATION). FORMATION indicates how players line up or position themselves on the field. When you have determined the FORMATION of your players press the corresponding A, B or C BUTTON to raise CHOOSE PLAY, (use the control pad to scroll through available options). PLAY selection designates types of plays and player assignments. Press up on the control pad to amend any entries, (back up). Once you have made your selections press the corresponding A, B, or C BUTTON to register your play and break from the huddle. Press the C BUTTON to snap the ball, (press the B BUTTON before the snap to draw the other team off sides). Use the control pad to animate offensive or defensive players. Press the A BUTTON to dive for extra yardage. Press the B BUTTON to spin out of a tackle. Once the ball has been snapped press the C BUTTON to raise the receiver screens. Receiver screens are designated by an A, B, or C which correspond to the A, B, or C BUTTONS on the control pad. A yardage marker is exhibited for each receiver indicating his location down field. Press the corresponding A, B, or C BUTTON to pass to an open receiver. Press the C BUTTON after the pass to attempt a jumping catch. Press the A or B BUTTONS after a catch for additional yardage, (break a tackle). If you do not issue commands after the ball is snapped the computer will automatically run the play. You may call an audible play at the line of scrimmage by pressing the A BUTTON. Press the A BUTTON to call a trick play, the B BUTTON to throw a quick pass against a blitz or the C BUTTON to call a running play, (an audible call must be made while the AUDIBLE sign is displayed). Press the B BUTTON to switch control between defensive players. Press the A BUTTON to make a diving tackle and the C BUTTON to deflect or block a pass or kick. Press the A BUTTON to call an audible defensive play at the line of scrimmage. Press the A BUTTON to call an audible play against the run, the B BUTTON to blitz the quarterback, or the C BUTTON to rush the passer. If you are playing in the PLAY-OFF mode retain your PASSWORD after each victory, (the PASSWORD allows you to resume gameplay at a later time).
