My Toast is old enough that I think it was out of updates, but Apple had
to reencode every AAC in the Apple store to actually stop that practice.
It's aggravating that they did it; all you need to do is burn a CD and
you can rip the audio. It's just an FU to the consumer, really...
Yeah, I've been using a CD-RW to convert purchased music to MP3 format.
Fucking AAC restrictions and just the odd stuff that happens with them,
just pisses me off. Like, I *never* move my music...it's on the PC, and
that's where it stays, never gets transferred...yet I've got a few
songs telling me I only have, like, 1 more "transfer" or "burn" of the
song. Wears me out to no end. After I convert them to MP3 I actually
just delete the AAC versions...
My iMac is the last of the dual boot iMacs (or at least its line us; I
don't remember if the bigger screen flat panel G4 can dual boot or not).
I rarely boot into 9 anymore, except to play Civ2, which crashes ot an
unacceptable degree in classic.
The last of the OS 9 booters, I thought, in the G4 series was the Dual
1.25ghz G4 tower(mirrored door model, I believe). At any rate, I think
it's just disgraceful that Apple took that ability out. I mean, I can
understand doing it in the Intel-based Macs, but the PPC? Man...
I would have liked to of gotten one of those "pack of gum" iPod Shuffle
models, but now they aren't even available anymore, and I'm sure if I
got one off ebay it'd only be about three more iTunes updates before it
wasn't even recognized anymore. Apple just makes me sick to my stomach
nowadays. I love the Mac, I hate Apple.
The longer shuffles are still in Target, probably all the other brick
and mortars too. They're just not in the online Apple Store. With a
little luck you can find them with the *** clearanced out of them in a
month or two.
Would be nice. I often times think of getting the Shuffle...but I think
I'd end up using it more as a portable HD than an actual MP3 player. At
home I've got gigs upon gigs of MP3s I play through iTunes, then in the
car I've got a 6 disc changer...so I just don't know when I'd get to
using the Shuffle for actual music. Still, though, $80 for a gig
portable HD that can also double as an MP3 player...it ain't bad. ;)
And new iTunes don't discrecognize old iPods; it's just
that new iPods disrecognize old iTunes (so far).
Yeah, I was exhaggerating a bit there(at Apple's expense, of course).
;)
I actually really like the new shuffle, everything but the "needs
10.3.9" ***. I keep 10.3.9 on an external disk so I can use Skype (I
have to reboot, but I can make free phone calls in the US and Canada; an
acceptable price to pay), so I'm considering putting my $50 credit at
Apple for having an old iPod and being part of a class action lawsuit
towards it.
I say go for it. Let us know how it pans out, would be nice if you got
something off of it.
If you happen to run into it, sure, if not, no big deal. I don't know
that I'd ever get around to it. About the only thing I still do on the
Mac is a little, old school gaming in OS 9(for the *** that you will
*never* get to run in XP, or due to your P4 processor) and some stuff
with Audio Overload(converting gaming music files into audio files).
Well, I'll probably come across the disc soon, and then you can use the
G4 to try out linux...
Ought to be interesting.
Yeah, might as well go for it. A modded Xbox would be a fun thing to
mess around with. I can't remember if they ever got a browser on there
or not, but I am pretty sure they found a way to get keyboard and mouse
support on it.
Once you run Linux, you can use the newest Thunderbird, and keyboards
and mice work fine in normal linux (not the tiny Linux install you get
with the memory card trick; you need to use the onscreen virtual
keyboard to actually install Xebian) on the Xbox.
(I picked up the original Mechassualt for $3 today; now all I need's for
the Xbox to USB adapter I just ordered online to wend its way to me and
I'm in business.)
You know, I wonder if that PSO Keyboard adapter that MS was giving away
when you bought the game(you had to mail in for it) would work out for
stuff like that? I went ahead and got the keyboard adapter when I
bought PSO, mostly because it was free...but also I thought it may be
useful down the road.
