I originally bought a Saturn when it was already obsolete in the summer
of 1999. I bought it for basically two reasons - Nights, and Panzer
Dragoon Saga. I got the analog controller and Nights (and to this day,
7 years later, have not played it seriously), but never picked up PDS,
as it was "too expensive" at $75. We all know the situation now - it's
around $175.
Obviously, for me at least, the game is not worth $175. However, there
are options. One is to simply buy it, beat it, and re-sell it. If I
get lucky enough to sell it at the same price I bought it, I'll have
spent around $10-$15 to "rent" the game. Depending on how eBay goes,
it could lose as much as $35 or I could even make money.
I'd say your idea is pretty good. I've owned it since launch, and
only played through it once. It's a very unique RPG, with a very unique
fighting engine and exploration aspect (targeting and destroying objects
using your dragon's laser), but I can't think of a game outside of a
nice rotating cabinet that's worth over $150. You ought to be able to
play through it and then resell it no problem, the question is will you
be willing to part with it simply to recover a mere day or two's labor
worth of money?
Well I'm not much of a collector. Ken Williams, the old founder and
CEO of Sierra On-Line, has stated that he does not have a large
collection of the old games and memorabilia - he considers eBay to be
his "collection". That's the way I look at it too. The only problem
would be if the price did happen to keep rising.
I could also buy and hold, hoping that the prices rise ever more. Have
they been steadily rising, or has it capped off at the recent levels?
Not even Dracula X, Chi no Rondo goes for more than $180. These
bastards aren't even getting this much for the game, they're just so
greedy that's all they'll take for it.
The last option is to pray for a re-release. Is there any chance of
this whatsoever? Could Nintendo's Revolution hold any promise?
Not an authentic one anyway.
The same question goes for Shining Force III and, if I ever got REALLY
crazy, Burning Rangers.
These two would be much easier to find at lower prices. Probably even
close to original retail, just don't get jacked into thinking it
shouldn't be in mint condition.
Sounds good...non-mint is no problem for me.
Thanks...
