Re: HELP!!!! Black Screen on Atari 800 XL's

Sounds just like a TI/99-4A I found at a thrift store. I connected it to
one of the TVs they had, and it was completely dead. Aside from the
power light, there was no sign of life at all.

I tried various types of troubleshooting such as putting them on
different TV's, putting the channels on 2,3,4, toggling the switch,
etc., using a switch box, using direct to cable using phono to F.. and
nothing seems to work.

The computers are definitely getting a signal to the television set.
Trouble is, is there's just a black screen, a clear black screen. I
even tried to put in a game and press start to at least get some
sound, but nothing.

If the R/F modulator was bad, the computer itself would still work, but
since it's totally unresponsive, something else is wrong: probably bad
connections, RAM, ROM, or CPU. There might also be blown capacitors.

Are Atari 800 XL's prone to this? Are they less well built than, say a
400 or 800? Any hope in salvaging them?

I dunno. I knew someone with an 800. He got rid of it because
connections kept coming loose and it would freeze up.
