spend that same money on a 64 BIT Jaguar game!!!" - sure, I know
better now, but that is the way I evaluated the situation back then.
For me, it goes back to my roots. I recently found a tattered piece of
paper from my high school daze. It was my sketch for my first concept
of my dream video playground. A Sony 7205, the then current 6 foot
diagnal, front screen cocktail table projection television anchoring an
arragement for an Odyssey, Pong, Super Pong, Channel F, Telstar Arcade,
O^2, Inty, TI-99/4, Apple ][, Atari 800 and as the centerpiece, a Sears
Video Arcade (I hadn't seen the Atari label yet, only the Sears tag).
You'll note the lack of the Studio II, Astrocade, or any other Pongs.
On the former two, I hadn't yet heard of those, and on the pongs, I was
unaware of just how many existed (and how many I would eventually have,
currently at more than 32). Also, note that the TI was a 99/4. The 4a
was still over 18 months off. And most importantly was that this
concept left no room for future growth. It was what would now be
considered an alpha. the betas were from before I had my onw house, and
now I'm on design 1.x, I have the house, I know which rooms I'll use, I
just need to get things figured out and locked in.
But looking back, I knew from when I got my first O^2, I would never
dump anything. I just couldn't afford the latest and greatest, and I am
still that way. My current emphasis is on the 90's to early millennium.
And price does matter.
