Re: How many compilation CDs were made for the PS1

Interesting. One of the things that has really upset me about the CD
age is
the compatability issues. Didn't the video game companies promise that
the CD age would do away with "cartridge-induced compatabilities?"

No, why would it? CD-ROM is just a medium to store data like any other.
There is some standardization with the ISO compliance, etc. meaning
compatibility across PC platforms, etc at least to see the data, but
that's it. (And even that doesn't extend to most console systems as an
anti-piracy measure, they don't want you reading those discs in
anything but the console its intended to play on).

The only way for all discs to be compatible with each other is if
everyone used exactly the same hardware which isn't going to happen.
Its like saying that all books should be in a single language just
because they are all printed the same way. It's not going to happen.

As far as I can tell that has not happened. I'm forced to read this
nonsense in
game informer magazine about microsoft emulating original x-box games
to run on the 360, and it is just a joke to me.

or maybe a feature? Better than not being able to read XBOX games at
all. Backwards compatibility is still somewhat rare in video games,
just as it was back in the day. Other than the 7800 you didn't see too
many systems that would run the cartridges from the previous generation
without buying extra hardware, and in many cases that extra hardware
was basically a plug in version of the 'emulated' system anyway, and
cost nearly as much!
