Re: My Revolution Predictions

>here's my prediction for Revolution -

Ooooh, rampant speculation! I love this game! My turn!!!

LAUNCH PRICE: $150 is definitely the sweet spot, if they can pull that
off they will attract a lot of attention, especially from those who
think of video games as an occassional fun distraction rather than an
expensive hobby. But deep inside, I have a feeling $200 is more likely.

LAUNCH TIMING: Thanksgiving is a pretty plausible guess, and probably
accurate. Personally, I hope they launch it a week or two before
Halloween. Here's why:

1) The initial surge of frenzied gotta-have-it-first maniacs will be
taken care of before the holiday crowds get in the stores.

2) The first adopter sales momentum will then be replaced with the
holiday season sales momentum, helping to keep early sales numbers
strong.

3) It will give 3rd parties a little more wiggle room between launch
day and Christmas for their games to ship.

CONSOLE BUNDLE: The console itself, plus the "freestyle" controller
with "nunchuk" joystick attachment and the "shell". Leaving out the
shell would be a bad move, as it would really help third parties that
want to do multi-platform ports. Including a Gamecube controller would
be just as good, though. Incuding a few "download credits" for their
classic titles would be cool, but I personally don't expect them to do
that. But I do expect them to offer cards at retail (similair to those
iTunes download cards) that can be used to download games.

LAUNCH LINE-UP: I agree that Super Smash Brothers looks pretty likely,
and Metroid Prime 3 as well. I will make one unusual predication and
say that I expect to see a Revolution version of Zelda: Twilight
Princess (in addition to the Gamecube version). It will be a little
prettier than the GC original, plus have a few added flourishes (aka
mini-games) to showcase the new controller. I'm sure there will be a
few other titles, but I'm not willing to predict any by name.

CONNECTIVITY: Of course the DS will link up, Nintendo has already said
as much. I agree that it will be much more popular than linking up the
GBA with the GC, but I don't think it will be widely used as an
alternative controller. As for the online element... I think Nintendo
will shy away from the community approach we see on Xbox Live, and
expand on the friend-code style connectivity we are seeing in Mario
Kart DS. I'm hoping for some sort of browser software, but I don't
expect it because of the kid-safe approach they are promising.

CONSUMER REACTION: Initially, I don't think there will be overwhelming
enthusiasm for the Revolution. Those first few months, most buyers will
be either Nintendo fanatics or cost conscience shoppers intimidated
more by the prices of the PS3 and 360 than by the controllers. But over
time the idea of a seperate gaming market, as well as the unique
controller, will be accepted by the public and I expect the system to
do well. Still, it will take a killer app (like Nintendogs on the DS)
to really push the Revolution into homes, ESPECIALLY the homes of
consumers that haven't usually owned a game console. At this point in
time, there isn't one in sight. (Then again, very few games have
actually been announced yet.)
