You're right, I don't think I ever guarded my Atari boxes. In fact, I'd
say I went so far as to discard the damn things!

Not really. I need look no further than my kids' rooms. Intellectually,
they KNOW that leaving Gamecube games and DVDs laying around loose can
lead to them getting damaged, but time and time again I will find them
laying around all over the place, often only a foot or two from the
corresponding box!
