Looking back on game packaging

In the early days of video games, let's start with Atari and INTV, the
games were packaged in cardboard boxes.
The way I see it, Atari boxes were (generally) designed to be
disguarded. On the other hand, it seems that Intellivision boxes were
NOT: there was a slot for the cartridge, the manual and overlays, and
it opened up like a book. Sure, materially they were only a small step
up from 2600 boxes, but they were a step up. I think this is the reason
that Intellivision games are seen more often in their original boxes.
Fast Foreward a few years: Nintendo pretty much went the "Atari" route,
and Sega did INTV one better, introducing a permenant, non-disposable
laminated case to hold the cartridge and instructions. Again, you see
loose master system carts, but generally speaking you see a hell of a
lot more of them with boxes.
And another few years: Nintendo, again goes the cheap disposable route
while Sega releases all thier games with hard plastic shells
immortalizing the artwork forever. As well, Turbografx releases CD case
holders which have stuck with the hucards through all these years.
Seeing a Genesis game in the original case is fairly common, but again,
there are plenty of loose carts as well - why? Did Funcoland not have
room for them all when they were heavily traded, and they just tossed
them? When I saw some SNES games the other day at the thrift store that
had the boxes, I paid $3 each for them just for the novelty. Those
boxes don't age too well, BTW.. but they look OK.
Well let's just stop right there and get to the QUESTION:
Now that all is said and done, did the way any of the games were
packaged really matter in the end?
.
