Can anyone here give me your top reasons why the real arcade machines
are better than emulation (besides controls)?

Thanks!

Presentation of the game. For example Space Invaders, with it's
angled mirrored glass, back lit (white black light) moon and star
field. Subroc-3D (I sold mine) with it's 3-D effect, TRON's multiple
points of artwork. Even cabinet art that you only see in the
periphery while you're playing like bezels, control panel and marquee.

The sound of the quarter dropping (OK, so a MAME cab can have a
working coin door). Even if you've had it on free play.

The history of the actual cab. I found two business cards (same guy's
name, two different Vendor names) and paper roll for quarters that
(together) had a complete series of meter readings from the first week
my SI was on location, back in 1978, up to (almost) the reading it had
when I bought it. The stories that sometime come with the machine (my
juke was in a restaurant with alleged ties to the Russian Mafia, the
repo man that got it was threatened and either voluntarily or
involuntarily vanished, and his partner ended up with it after paying
6 months back rent on a storage shed...could have been total bunk, but
I enjoyed hearing the story and shooting the sh** with the guy who
ended up with it).

The discovery's made inside the cab; could be a dead rat, a cool token
from a long dead arcade...could be a mini fortune in quarters stuffed
in a bag inside (you out there Mike O? ;-)

That look of envy (or "that's cool" nod) from guys you pass on the
road, as they see what you're hauling in the back of your truck.

Pride in ownership...and think of the Friday night's and week's worth
of allowance someone once spent on your machine. The fun (or
pain...until that little "victory" or "ah-ha!" moment) in maintaining/
restoring it (btw, my first "victory" was re-capping a Popeye cocktail
after reading Al's page on Cap kits - THANKS AL!)
