Just a follow up on this thread. Someone on another arcade NG
suggested, turning up the black level ( or down ) what ever the case
may be... Duh. Yes, I'm an idiot. So, all my voltage readings
indicated it was working. and in fact it was.

Now, I have three distinct video traces, a red, green and blue
picture. Seems the Yoke got banged pretty hard and the guns are out
of alignment? Also the image is not flat like 2D, it's more of a
skewed 3D effect. Is that what is called Geometry of the picture?

Is it difficult to realign the RGB guns? Is that convergence? Do I
just move the yoke rings around till I get the cross hatch pattern
white instead of RGB?

What a great learning experience this is turning out to be.


The manual for nearly any color monitor has the alignment procedure. It's not difficult, but it can be fiddly. Make sure you degauss the monitor before starting, and leave it in that position throughout the process. You'll need something to produce solid color screens and a test pattern, I use a Mortal Kombat board since it's cheap and has decent monitor test patterns. You'll adjust the green purity first, then blue and red, then convergence. If you can't get it right, it's possible the tube was banged around and the shadow mask inside has shifted.
