Ok I am now deep into my restoratin project and finally have the game
up and running! My problem is the control dont respond. I took both
joystick apart, soaked and cleaned the plastic pieces (and rubber
grommets) and reassembled them. Now the control just stick in any
direction you choose, and don't spring back. I am guessing the
grommets are the culprit. I would like to keep the original leaf style
controls, if they are reliable, and fairly easy to restore. Otherwise
I could switch to the new micro switch style. Your thoughts?

My thought is to do whatever it takes to keep the leafs. I've played with
the microswitch type on one of those new Namco Reunion machines and I hated
it. It might be OK if you've never played much Pac - but there's no way I
could switch. Replacing the rubber grommets is SOP - mine are about 20
years overdue, particularly my upright.

I'm not sure those particular grommets are so easy to find anymore. The
Pac joys are a smaller diameter than the more popular Wico replacements.
Last one I replaced, the joystick was rusted on and I had a biotch of
a time getting it off!! But, as Clams mentioned... do what you can to
repair your leaf configuration. Microswitches SUCK for all classic
games!! Especially 8-way joys for 4-way games ;-)

BTW: it sounds as if maybe you reassembled your joystick incorrectly,
thus causing something to bind. Not terribly hard to do I suppose.
Take your time until you get it right. Even a badly worn grommet
should return your joy to the middle position. Be careful not to use
alcohol on the rubber pieces. Douching© the rubber parts down with a
mild lubricant (such as wd-40) will help preserve the pliability also.
