Spy hunter SSIO help

Hello, I'm trying to fix a problem with my spy hunter, where sounds
(like machine gun and missle fire) are either missing or "wig out"
after a few minutes.

I have 3 SSIO boards (all different verions) and a known good z-80,
static RAM, sound proms and 2 8910s
when I put them in each board... out of the 3 boards one seems to work
perfectly (as far as sound goes) however on this board the controls
don't work. (car shoots up and to the left with "turbo") and in
diagnostic modes it doesn't respond to anything. The other 2 have fine
controls, but the sounds have have issues.

anyway I beleive (I don't have schematics yet) that the steering
control is pins 1-7 on J5. according to http://www.klov.com/library/tech/mcr.html

the wierd things is on the 2 boards sets that are working the caps
c104-c111 and the resistor pack at RM3 are all ripped out. On the
board that DOESn't work they are there.

so my questions are
1) does anyone know why the caps and resistors are missing? I've
googled it and alto of people have reported that theirs are missing
but I haven't seen an answer of "why"

2) also does anyone know what pins 10-17 on J5 are for? on
http://www.klov.com/library/tech/mcr.html they are listed ad MD0, MD1,
MD2, MD3, ST0, ST1, ARD, SEL... though I'm not sure what those
abbreviations stand for.
