If the anode wasn't hooked up you'd have arcing all over the place. Did
the
screen control near the flyback get adjusted? Solder bridge somewhere on
the
boards?
when turning it up, I get a very bright white picture. It's just the
game picture itself that is very dim.
I also adjusted the brightness control, and got a brighter white
picture as well. However the picture of the game graphics is still
extremely dim.
Well all the HV stuff is obviously fine then, something is keeping the
video
level low. I vote for either a wire plugged in the wrong place or a solder
bridge somewhere.
That is what I'm beginning to be afraid of.
One very strange issue we ran into was, there was a component that
looked exactly like a really bad capactiro, but the board was so dirty
we couldn't figure out what it was. We desoldered it, and I want to
say it was a resistor. It was all black, and located right below the
power supply section. Well when we took it out, it looked like it had
a washer underneath it that fell apart. We put the washer back
underneath and re-soldered it back to the board. That's a big culprit
in my eyes. Going to look at the schematic today and see if I can
determine exactly what that was.
The only other thing was that 3 of the capacitors in Bob's kit had a
LOWER voltage rating then what was pulled out of the board. In 2
cases, the voltage on the cap we pulled out was 65volts, and we put in
50 volt caps (same microfarad rating). The 3rd case was pulling out a
100 volt cap, and put in a 50volt cap, (same microfarad) rating. We
didn't look at the schematic at the time, and took Bob's word for it.
I figured if it was dramtically wrong, we'd smell some cooking
capacitors. But once again no pops, smoke or anything.
What do you think of the black "resistor" we found?

What's the reference designation on the board near that part? Hard to say
what it is without seeing it.
I wouldn't worry about the lower voltage capacitors, the ones in the monitor
may not have even been original.
